AMD Targets Edge and Telco Growth with EPYC 8005 “Sorano” CPUs

AMD is expanding its server portfolio with the EPYC 8005 “Sorano” processors, designed to bring high efficiency and strong compute performance to telecom and edge environments, enabling scalable infrastructure for next-generation virtualized networks and distributed workloads.
EPYC 8005 Support Arriving Soon
Organizations running existing EPYC 8004 platforms can prepare for a smooth transition, as BIOS updates enabling EPYC 8005 processor support are expected to roll out in May, simplifying upgrade paths and protecting infrastructure investments.
Optimized for Telecom and Edge Efficiency
The EPYC 8005 series is built on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture and tailored for single-socket servers in telecom and edge deployments. With up to 84 cores and a power envelope reaching 225W, the platform focuses on performance per watt and per dollar. This makes it ideal for vRAN workloads, where efficient scaling and predictable performance are critical in large, distributed environments.
Driving Scalable vRAN and Network Performance
AMD positions Sorano as a key enabler for virtualized radio access networks, introducing optimizations like improved LDPC decoding to accelerate 5G data processing. These enhancements reduce latency and free up compute resources, allowing operators to run more network functions per server. The result is improved throughput, lower operational costs, and more flexible, software-defined network infrastructure.
